Sometimes, gum diseases can develop without any symptoms. Even gums appearing to be healthy and fine could have harmful buildup depositing below the gum line. This can affect the oral health of the person. The buildup is called calculus which is basically plaque that has become hardened and is emitting bacteria. Over the course of time it can affect the tissues surrounding the tooth and even loss of it. Periodontal probe, a dental instrument is used to detect gum diseases. The instrument probe is placed between gums and tooth to measure the space between teeth and the surrounding bone and gum. Periodontal pockets deeper than 3 mm are indicator of trouble. It can signify possible erosion of bone surrounding the tooth or even inflamed gums. Gingival probing is an essential part of dental procedure. It is used to make sure that gums and teeth are at their optimum health.
