Gingivitis is a condition in which gum tissues become inflamed due to bacterial buildup. It is characterized by an early stage of gum disease that has not reached a point that could cause bone loss or tissue damage. When plaque sits on the teeth for too long, the bacteria start to cause irritation, redness, or even swelling of gum tissue. Gingivitis is not accomplished by any sort of pain which is why most patients don’t even realize that they have it. Symptoms of this condition include tenderness and sensitivity of gum tissues. Patients also experience bleeding while flossing or brushing. They may also notice their toothbrush turning slightly pink while using it. This is another symptom. Gingivitis can progress and cause even more complicated if left untreated for a long time. Seeking dental care is advised to address the problem in a timely manner.
